Mansion Case Study

The Challenge:

In 2023 we installed a mobile signal boosting solution for a 16th-century mansion nestled in the remote Aberdeenshire countryside. Its thick stone walls, slate roof, and secluded location meant that for many years the occupants had very limited mobile signal. This was very frustrating for the owners, who were keen to set up an office on the estate and were looking for a solution that would not only improve signal, but also preserve the historic integrity of their listed property.

The Solution:

Connection Solutions embarked on a meticulous design and installation process. An initial site survey thoroughly assessed signal strength within and around the mansion, identifying areas with particularly weak coverage. The team then went away and put together a bespoke solution that catered to the unique characteristics of the house.

Given the building's listed status and distinct character, external antennas were strategically placed on hidden rooftops to minimise visual impact. A combination of discreet internal antennas and signal boosters were employed to amplify and distribute the signal throughout the building, often behind wooden panelling. The installation process was very carefully planned, to ensure minimal disruption to its architectural fabric.

Conclusion

Overcoming Challenges:

Connection Solutions engineers faced several obstacles during the project. The remote location necessitated careful planning to ensure reliable equipment delivery and installation. For the mobile signal, a Cel-Fi Quatra system was installed, but the internet was also adjudged to be so poor that it was also recommended that a StarLink system was selected, with additional amplifiers brought int to account for the thick stone walls and slate roof. The listed status of the building required close collaboration with Historic Environment Scotland to ensure the installation was in compliance with their preservation guidelines.

‍The Results:

The installation of the Cel-Fi and Starlink systems transformed mobile signal and wifi within the property. The occupants now enjoy super fast internet and crystal clear calls throughout the property, meaning they could for the first time in years set up an office on the grounds. The discreet installation of antennas and boosters, hidden from view, preserved the character and charm of the building.
